Artist's Description
Donald "C-Note" Hooker is a poet, playwright, painter, musician, and America's most prolific prisoner artist. He is known as the "King of Prison Hip Hop" for his work in the genre, which he uses to address social and political issues facing the incarcerated population.
C-Note was born in Los Angeles in 1965. He began writing poetry at a young age, and was involved in the city's Pop Locking scene. In 1998, he was sentenced to life in prison. While incarcerated, C-Note continued to create poems and raps, and began to focus on hip hop as a way to express his experiences and raise awareness of the issues facing prisoners.
C-Note has released several hundred visual and literary works of prison hip hop, and his works have been featured in publications such as Goodmen Project and The London Daily Post.
